DOST strengthens networks on patenting-directed R&D

Makati City – Thru its Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI), the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is currently conducting a two-day training for the intellectual property (IP) and technology transfer professionals of its partner institutions on how to further analyse and utilize patent information here at the Makati Palace Hotel, Makati City until tomorrow.

Dubbed as “Training on Subscription to Patent Search Solution: Derwent Innovation,” the training is now being attended by 50 participants from three DOST councils, seven DOST-based R&D institutes, and selected 13 RDIs that are either higher educations institutions in the Philippines or are full-fledged research agencies. The activity is in collaboration with the Clarivate Analytics in Singapore, a global company in providing trusted insights and analytics to accelerate the pace of innovation, Engr. Edgar I. Garcia, TAPI’s director, bared.

Engr. Garcia informed the participants who are representing some of its most valuable collaborators that the activity answers three basic questions: First, what are we going to do with our granted IPs? Second, how can we increase the quality of our IP assets? And third, how can we know if we are on the right track of R&D spending?

“The second and third questions are the most important reasons why we are now partnering with Clarivate Analytics. Your presence here means a lot to this endeavor as you will be taught how to landscape and mine the patent databases in the world and to strengthen the R&D outputs of your respective agencies and universities,” Engr. Garcia explained.

Engr. Garcia also expressed that the participants “are now in the forefront of this cutting edge work, being the first batch of soldiers that the DOST will train who will be assigned in the forefront of making our R&D spending more meaningful and focused.”

“The skills that you will get from this training will enable your agencies and universities to strategize your R&D at your fullest and at par with some of the leading teams in the world,” Engr. Garcia also pointed out.

The two-day live-in training is an event being organized by the DOST through TAPI under the project entitled “Support to the Commercialization of 500 DOST Generated Technologies & Strengthening the Country’s Intellectual Property & Technology Portfolios”, and is being handled by Ms. Ridhma Dhar and Ms. Aisling Hayes.
